A St. Johns Tradition Since 1959

A St. Johns Tradition Since 1959

The Roadhouse tradition of “Good Food and Great Drinks” began in 1959 when my grandparents, “Big” Jim and Rosie Nuser, acquired what was then the Parkway Inn in St. Johns, Michigan. Though the location stayed the same, everything else began to evolve. In 1961, the name was changed to The Roadhouse, and over the next two decades, the building saw major interior and exterior renovations. These changes laid the foundation for what would become one of the most recognized dining spots in Mid-Michigan.

The Real Roadhouse Experience

The Real Roadhouse Experience

Throughout the 1960s and '70s, The Roadhouse earned a statewide reputation not only for great food but for its truly unique decor. With more than 350 guns displayed on the walls, the restaurant quickly became known as The Real Roadhouse—a name that locals and travelers alike remember fondly. This distinctive touch helped create a one-of-a-kind experience that continues to set us apart in the Gratiot County dining scene.

Ye Ol' Roadhouse: A Family Legacy

Ye Ol' Roadhouse: A Family Legacy

After a brief change in ownership in the 1980s, the restaurant returned to our family, with a small but meaningful change: it was renamed Ye Ol’ Roadhouse to honor its history while marking a new chapter. I helped run the restaurant alongside my grandparents until 1997, when I, Ryan Colthorp, was given the honor of becoming the next-generation owner. Carrying on our family legacy is one of the proudest achievements of my life.

Modern Comfort with a Northern Michigan Feel

Modern Comfort with a Northern Michigan Feel

In 1998, I began infusing the space with a northern Michigan theme I loved—bringing that cozy, rustic charm to St. Johns. In 2005, we expanded the bar from 12 seats to over 30, thanks to the incredible support of our growing community. Every improvement we've made has been with our guests in mind. I’m continually grateful for the warm welcome and continued support from the people of St. Johns. If there’s anything I can do to make your visit more enjoyable, just let me know. Thank you for making Ryan’s Roadhouse your go-to destination.

Sincerely, your host
Ryan
